Abelard is committed to providing Minnesota homeowners with a resource for the recent hail and wind storms. Most homeowners don't even realize they have had hail damage to their roof, siding, or other exterior structures. The impact of hail damage can loosen, fracture or remove granules from your asphalt shingles. Hail can leave tiny to large pits in your siding and fascia as well. The granules protect the asphalt from sunlight and Ultra Violet Light (U.V rays). The roofing asphalt will deteriorate very quickly once it has had hail impact and is exposed to the sun, rain and wind. This is the reason hail damaged roof structures will prematurely fail.
Damage from hail to roof structures may or may not show up immediately as visual damage to the inexperienced observer. In some cases, the effects may not be visible or apparent for about a year or two. The effects of a hailstorm void the shingle manufacturer's warranty, as they cannot warrant against "Acts of God" such as hailstorms. This type of damage is covered under your homeowner’s insurance policy.

Common Questions
How do I know if I have hail damage to my roof?
Can I tell from the ground? If you have had hail in your area, to determine if the shingles have been damaged a close inspection of the shingles has to be made from the roof. Damage is often missed from a ground level inspection.
My roof looks fine! Could it still be damaged?
Roofing systems must be physically inspected by a trained roof inspector to determine if there is actual hail damage. Hail damage is insidious in nature and may not physically cause leakage for years after the hail storm.
